I got the idea to do these off a YouTube video and they were a huge hit at Timmy's preschool party. Although how can you ever go wrong with colorful cupcakes, tons of frosting, and sprinkles?
2 boxes of basic yellow cake mix
All required ingredients in above cake mix (eggs, water, oil)
6 colors of gel food coloring. I'm a traditional girl and use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
24 cupcake tins/papers
Butter cream frosting
Sprinkles...just to top it off:)
Here we go!
The obvious...2 boxes o' cake mix. I buy whatever is cheapest at Safeway
Add 3 drops (per color) of your gel food coloring in each bowl
Mix it on up!
Here's what it should look like when you are done
Starting backwards (beginning with purple), take one spoonful of each color and slowly layer colors of cake batter on top of one another. The first time I made these, I TOTALLY misjudged how much batter for each color to use. By the time I got to "red", the batter was practically spilling over the top of the muffin papers. What a mess! You'll want to still be able to see a bit of the paper liner by the time you've used all of your colors.
Stick 'em in the oven. Bake according to instructions on the box.
Throw on your frosting...one area this girl clearly needs to work on. Making the frosting? Yeah, good at that. Decorating with it? Still kind of suck at it. Although I am getting better:) Using large frosting couplers really helps...as evidenced by the top picture on this post. Thank you Mom. The ones below were ones I had done for my nephew's birthday party. Sorry Matty. Auntie Tara will do better next time!
Isn't it super cool how they look like rainbows on the inside??!!
